Maison Margiela Partners With H&M

Have name brands and high end fashion become too available? If so, will this decrease the desire to possess- and even the supply and demand for it?

For the past year or so there have been a lot of collaborations with high end fashion designers and mainstream clothing stores. H&M first paired up with Versace in 2011, and the informal debut was during Kanye's performance on the runway at Victoria Secret's Fashion Show. His bomber jacket with the staple Versace print on the sleeves was quite the piece. Not long after, the craze for Versace and for H&M was on the rise. I always wondered, with a man like Kanye West and how he presents himself we all know he takes pride in his "exclusive" high end image. So, why doesn't he mind wearing a $129 jacket that he knows everyone else will also (Or does he care)?

This year, Maison Martin Margiela has paired up with H&M for their collaboration. At the launch party, celebrities in attendance ranged from Alexander Wang, Sarah Jessica Parker, and of course, Kanye West. The pieces, from men's sneakers and jackets to women's dresses and blouses, are nothing less than amazing. Looking through the look book, nothing is more than $500, which is, for lack of a better phrase, a bargain sale for such a renowned fashion designer. With this being said, is the outcome of the collaboration going to be more than a huge hit for H&M, will it be a signifier of less exclusivity for Margiela? I personally think what makes high-end fashion so classified in its caliber is the mere fact that the pieces are very particular and rather limited. It allows the line to remain in high demand because collectively, we as humans enjoy having what others don't. Kanye West embodies this desire.

I hope to see some progression for Margiela within this year of collaboration, because his work is outstanding. If I could afford it, I would be a young Kanye myself, showing off rare pieces and basking in every moment. However, if such collaborations for H&M continue, what is the outlook on high end fashion vs. mainstream? Is this the beginning of fusion and somewhat equality, or will hierarchy continue to reign in the fashion world?

Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert

For one-night-only, a star-studded cast of music industry’s most valuable players will be gracing New York City’s legendary arena, Madison Square Garden, to put on a benefit concert for Hurricane Sandy!  This event, officially tagged the 12.12.12 concert, will be featuring performances from Billy Joel and Paul McCartney to Alicia Keys and Kanye West.  If you haven’t guessed already, the show will be going down this Wednesday, December 12!  You have a chance to attend a viewing of this benefit concert for free—yes FREE!

Many people can recall the momentous Concert for New York City benefit that took place weeks after September 11, 2001 in honor of New York Fire Department and New York Police Department’s first responders, their families, those lost in the attacks and those in recovery.  Well, the same organizers of that event are putting on the benefit concert for families affected by Hurricane Sandy’s wrath.  This benefit is expected to be a remarkable event in history and it’s happening right here in New York City!   All proceeds will directly benefit Hurricane Sandy victims through the Robin Hood Foundation.

You don’t have to worry about this performance costing you a single penny, as selected movie theatres in hurricane-affected areas will be screening the show live for free with complimentary snacks!  Because tickets are distributed on a first come, first serve basis, it’s advised that you contact the listed movie theatre to ensure your seat at the screening!

Additionally, the concert will be broadcast globally!  For one magical night, the United States and international television stations, Clear Channel radio stations and premier websites, such as YouTube and Yahoo, will be broadcasting the event worldwide.  Event producers James Dolan, John Sykes and Harvey Weinstein expressed their anticipation in this disclosed statement: "The live simulcast of this historic benefit concert in movie theatres will provide a welcome opportunity for those people still recovering from the devastation to have an enjoyable and a much-needed night out. Seeing this incredible all-star lineup on the big screen and hearing it in surround sound will certainly make for a memorable evening."

All in all, victims still recovering from Sandy will be able to experience a well-deserved night out to forget about their troubles and rock out with their favorite musicians!  Spread the word; you won’t want to miss out!  To check out the movie theatre locations visit this website: http://www.121212concert.org/watch#section-5

Artists on The Rise: Ashley Germain

As the weeks of school are winding down, and the stress is growing its good to know that there are hard new mix-tapes and albums to help us pull through.  Though they came out last week, and oh how I missed writing to you guys over the Thanksgiving break, these two artists are just too good to skip over.  Yes yes, I’m talking about Fab and French Montana!  Fabolous’ The Soul Tape 2 overall was a dope piece by our New York native rapper. Features from J. Cole, Wale, Trey Songz and Joe Budden help the mixtape bang, my favorites are “Louis Vuitton”, “Beauty” and “Diced Pineapples”.  French Montana’s Mac & Cheese 3 got a few mixed views from some STJ students, some saying it banged from beginning to end, others saying they can only handle French on a feature. Personally, I thought it went pretty hard, especially with his long list of features from artist like Ross to Mac Miller, the mixtape was definitely diverse.  Even though I think Mac & Cheese 2 was a better mix, you have to give it to French for pulling out a great piece of work after months of delays.

All semester long I’ve brought to you the talent of our favorite mainstream and underground artist, but never a local STJ Student; until now.  Ashley Germain is the beautifully talented singer songwriter of the Class of 2015, with a voice that chills.  The first time I heard Ashley sing was a Friday evening in Century Hall a few of weeks ago while a couple of friends and I were all in a heated conversation about the music industry.  When we all calmed down a bit we asked Ashley to sing us a song that she wrote, and when she did her voice silenced the whole room.  Her soulful full-bodied voice could hit all ranges, she went from hitting the highest of high notes to the sweet low notes of a painful love song.  Ashley is a force to be reckoned with.  Her moving voice is truly one of a kind, and her humble spirit will make you love her instantly.  While talking to her about music you can see its her passion, she loves to perform anything heartfelt by artists like Adele, Christina Aguilera or Amy Winehouse.  When I asked her what her biggest career aspiration was she replied, “I just want a lot of people to appreciate my music, if anything. I also want to win one Grammy Award, just one.  Not to say that’s where my success ends, but that’s one of my goals right now.”  Well I think its achievable for her and so many more artists here, I believe the talent at St. John’s has no limits.

Ashley is currently working on her first major project, which will be available in December, keep a look out on her Youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/BasHlEYAsHley?feature=watch or SoundCloud.  Below is her recent cover of Alicia Keys’ “Brand New Me”.

Target First Saturdays

Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum attracts thousands to experience live music and performances, stunning exhibitions, art discussions, and film screenings—all for free!  First Saturdays at the museum has been a tremendous hit for many years, as I can recall attending it multiple times as a little girl.  Over the past 2 years, it’s become a hot spot for people of all ages! This Saturday, the Brooklyn Museum opens it’s doors for you to indulge in a wide range of culturally eclectic events and programs.  Here are a few interesting happenings going on this Saturday:

Flex is King:  Flex is King is a raw, uncut documentary that takes a glimpse into the dance movement “flexing”.   Featuring flexing artists, Deidre Schoo and Michael Beach Nichols, the documentary takes on a candid, but inspirational melody, which ultimately highlights the beauty and precision of this art form.  Several clips will be exclusively shown this Saturday!  Additionally, this event will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers and a live demonstration of flexing! Be sure to view the trailer here: http://vimeo.com/35915742
Soulful Tunes:  Maya Azucena is a talented singer-songwriter who will be gracing First Saturday visitors with her new album, Cry Love.  Ms. Azucena’s sound is reminiscent of Jill Scott.  Cry Love is smooth.  It’s groovy.  It’s soulful.
Spit and Passion:  The author of Spit and Passion Cristy C. Roads will be discussing her new book about her struggle finding a balance her strong Cuban Catholic roots, and family, while discovering her “newfound queer identity”.
Get Moving:  First Saturdays will be closing with a dance performance by L.O.U.D (League of Unreal Dancing).   L.O.U.D is a Brooklyn-based dance agency that features multi-talented performers that use dance to express individuality!  Most L.O.U.D performances are gritty, exciting dance battles that incite energy and exhilaration in audience members.  Expect a good time.

What to do in NYC: Black Friday Edition

To shop or not to shop, that is the question.  With Black Friday just a few days away, the level of anxiety and excitement across America is increasing by the second.  Black Friday is a highly anticipated event in many households across the nation and it looks like Black Friday 2012 will not disappoint!  Therefore, I’ve taken the time to cruise through several newspapers and websites looking for the best Black Friday sales happening not just in New York, but also the rest of the country.

Urban Outfitters:  Urban Outfitter is infamous for selling overpriced goodies.   Lucky for us, Urban Outfitters is offering customers 50% off all sale items.  Whether the object of your desire is $7 or a $100, 50% off will do you justice!

H&M:  While H&M hasn’t released their sales for Black Friday yet, they have a Black Friday presale going on between November 19th and 21st.  They’re offering deals starting at just $7!  While many retail-clothing stores aren’t revealing what they’ll have in store, I know that several lucky men and women will score H&M’s desirable collab items with Versace and Maison Martin Margiela for terrific prices.  Additionally, there’s buzz that H&M will be dropping prices for many items to just $5—seriously!

Tommy Hilfiger:  Tommy Hilfiger just revealed their exciting Black Friday deals for 2012!  All items—I repeat—all items in the store will be 40% off and all purchases over $200 will receive an additional 25% percent off!  Do not miss out!

Victoria’s Secret:  I have good news for participants of Victoria’s Secret Black Friday sale last year!  Those amazing limited edition tote bags abundantly filled with beauty must-haves will again be given out to customers this year when at least $65 is spent!  Last year, the bag alone was valued at $70!  While Victoria’s Secret hasn’t revealed their deals for Black Friday, I am sure they will be worthwhile!  Additionally, if it’s anything like last year, customers shopping online will be given the opportunity to receive the limited edition totes as well!

Target:  Target is offering many drool-worthy items for phenomenal prices.  Target is the perfect place for Black Friday shopping if you’re looking for a tremendous amount of sales and a variety of items to steal—yes, steal!  The prices are so great they’re nearly a steal.  The three featured items on the website includes, the Canon T3 DSLR bundle originally $749.99 but now $499.99, the Nook Simple touch originally $99.99 but now $49.00, and the 4 GB XBox 360 Kinect Bundle originally $299.99 but now $199.99.  While these are all electronic goodies, Target will be offering deals for toys, entertainment, women apparel, men apparel, children apparel, home goods, furniture, Christmas items, and health and beauty products.  In short, if you’re heading to Target, you need to have a plan in place!  Visit the website to review ALL Black Friday deals! (http://www.target.com/c/target-black-friday/-/N-5q0f2)

Wal-Mart:  Wal-Mart promises “some of the year's best shopping values” this Black Friday 2012!  Much like Target, Wal-Mart is featuring a website page dedicated to revealing all of their well-calculated deals for consumers.  Check them out here!  (http://localad.walmart.com/Walmart/Entry/Flash?forceview=y&povid=cat1076614-env430434-module480045-lLink2&promotioncode=LA_Walmart-121123)  I think I have to agree with Wal-Mart when they say that they’re offering some of the greatest deals of the year because there are so many deals that are truly inexpensive!  To name a few, 1/4 Carat Diamond Hoop Earrings in Sterling Silver will be $38; Casio G-Shock watches will be $47, and Danskin pullovers for $6.  If you’re looking for electronics or kids toys, Wal-Mart is offering the greatest deals.  Be sure to peruse the website!

Best Buy:  How can you not expect Best Buy to elevate the excitement and deliver some generous deals on the latest gadgets and electronics?!  Best Buy’s circular highlights include, the Canon PowerShot A2300 digital camera for just $79.99, a 10-Cup Drip Coffeemaker for $7.99, and a Samsung 28.0-Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator (Stainless-Steel) originally priced at $3,199.99 but now $1,899.99!  Now, I’m not sure if you’re looking for a refrigerator at this point, but I LOVE a good deal!  To view the rest, visit this website.  (http://blackfriday.com/stores/best-buy?store=best-buy)

Rihanna x Wale

Today I am Unapologetic for having Rih’s new album on replay all day.  Rihanna’s seventh studio album titled Unapologetic came out today and it seems to be what everyone is talking about.  I think it’s a strong album for her, especially because its so different than her past albums.  Its got this nasty swag to it, like she’s living in her prime and could care less what critics say about her.  From the upbeat club bound “Phresh Off the Runway” that will end up on the radio for sure, to nice collaborations with Future for one of my favorites “Loveeeee Song” Rihanna proves again why she’s on-top.  One of the best things about Rih is her ability to change, she’s a chameleon with her style keeping her Navy on their toes with what she’s will come out with next.

Anytime I’m asked who is your favorite rapper, its like one of those questions where you ask, “right now? Or of all time?”.  Well I’m always torn, just excited really, for what is new to come out.  Wale is definitely one of my favorites I always can rely on.  He’s poetic and hip hop, and though a lot of people feel like he may have changed or even sold out, I disagree.  Wale has a story-like flow and can offer the best of both worlds, with his new mixtape coming out I hope he can go back to his days of More About Nothing flow.  The mixtape is called “Folarin”, so keep an eye out for that.

This past weekend I took a trip to the Village to get some culture.  The beautiful thing about New York is the music that you get from all around you.  A couple stops into my ride on the F train a Mexican Marachi band came on my car and played a couple songs.  It reminded me that in a city like this there is a pulse of music and culture everywhere, even in the most unexpected places.

French Montana’s Mac and Cheese 3 is supposed to drop tonight (Monday, Nov 19)!  After his numerous delays I’m ready to hear what French has been working on.  Also keep a look out for Fabolous’ The Soul Tape 2 comes out in two days!

I hope you all enjoy your thanksgiving and black Friday steals!

You Are What You Wear..Or Maybe Not?

Is your style really a reflection of you? Do you care what image you convey with your clothing? What truly means 'dress to express'?

Teenagers and the demographic of college-age students alike are the number one priority demographically when it comes to the fashion world. I just want to know, do you think they really care about your best interest? Are you conscious of your choices? Everyday we witness the media- social networks, tabloids, gossip websites- hype up celebrities and their so-called 'fashion sense'. It's sad to say there are those of us who subconsciously emulate those people to a T. Being that we are children of older generations- the psychedelic and activist era of the sixties, the revolutionary and disco era of the seventies, the retro and glam of the eighties, and so on- you'd think collectively we'd each conjure up a sense of individualism. It hurts me to say a lot of us rely on those put on a pedestal around us to dress us, which can in itself relay a lot about us to the world.

At the end of the day, some might say they do not care about the opinions of others, or everyone will eventually look the same. Touché. However, as pictures are worth a thousand words, do you really want to look back and have those words not be your own? Allow your soul to glow through the clothing.  Fashion  statements are the unspoken words of the individual wearing them; don't allow the clothes to wear you.

A NYC Spectacular: Radio City Christmas Spectacular

With the first snow fall of the season and Thanksgiving literally around the corner, there is certainly a sense of community, hope and excitement in the atmosphere—a semblance reminiscent of Christmas.   Yes, folks!  It’s that time of the year again!
Starting this past weekend, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is back for their 85th year celebration!  Let me tell you—this show never disappoints.   The one-of-a-kind extravaganza, which features the dazzlingly synchronized Rockettes as well as numerous and surprising attractions, keeps you on the edge of your seat with glee.  I’ve seen the Radio City Christmas Spectacular five times and it still gives me chills.  Minute by minute you are enthralled by the creativity, imagination and perfection of each precise moment.  All of the vivid special effects and holiday tunes make the build up to Christmas even more magical.  Putting aside the aspects that make the show special, there is an undeniable feeling you get witnessing the show unfold.  You literally feel like a little kid again.  For one moment in time—you may just remember what it is like to believe in MAGIC.  It’s impossible to leave without a sense of inspiration and gratitude because the show’s message embodies those two themes.   All in all, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a great experience to share with loved ones no matter what age!
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular will be going on now through December 30th.   Be sure to get your tickets as soon as possible because the show is known to sell out by December.  You can get your tickets through Ticketmaster.  (http://www.ticketmaster.com/Radio-City-Christmas-Spectacular-NYC-tickets/artist/807157) Additionally, for 20% off your tickets, enter the offer code NYCGO.

Ne-Yo x Cassidy x J. Cole x Rihanna

It looks like winter is just about here people!  And what’s better than some good R&B music?  Ne-Yo’s release of R.E.D. was a great album especially for the season.  R.E.D. is a beautiful smooth piece Ne-Yo created; he has some of his classical style and also some upbeat dance tracks that give off a pop vibe.  While he was on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club he said that his album was just good music, whether it’s R&B or pop; point, blank, period.  Now I’m not a big fan of his dance tracks but they are doing well on the charts. I think R.E.D. is a great piece and I’ll be listening to this one for a while.

Cassidy and Meek Mill are all over social sites with Cassidy’s commenting on battling Meek. Allegedly, Meek said he was open to battling either Murda Mook or Cassidy for $100K. A few tweets later Meek claimed he meant for the rappers to battle it out themselves and then subsequently pronounced Mook to be King.  Cassidy then called into Philly’s Hot 107.9 to say he was down to battle Meek and even complimented him; you can check out the video below.  This would be a great battle, with Meek’s mean flow and come up on freestyles he could bring something different and hard.  Cassidy, however is known for this with a talent like no other. I’d have to say Cassidy would take this one in my opinion, but I am looking forward to finding out if they really will go through with it.

J. Cole’s sophomore album finally has a date of January 28, 2013. I’m excited to hear what other narrative, poetic stories Cole will hit us with next. Though lately, I’ve had some interesting conversations about J. Cole and his signing to Jay Z’s label, Roc Nation.  Some people feel like his talent was muffled under Jay Z’s label, that in order to make it big under his label and obtain that top spot is to be another Kanye West.  I can’t agree; I feel like Cole is one of those intelligent rappers who is dedicated to his craft, and with a mentor like Jay he knows he has to step up to the plate which I think Born Sitter will.

This Afternoon Rihanna had a listening party for her album coming out November 19th, Unapologetic. The cost to get in?  It’s free, with any donation of practical goods to help those affected by Sandy’s rage.  The launch was held at Jay Z’s 40/40 club and although I was all too upset I wasn’t able to go, I heard it was a lot of fun and some friends of mine even got to meet her.  The beautiful songstress promised to donate $100,000 to the Food Bank of New York City to aid those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy and also 1,000 sleeping bags.  As sweet as she is spicy, Rihanna proved the charity and love that we all need to adapt especially in a time like this.  Ri Ri also released her anticipated video for her single Diamonds, below is the link.

In Style: Leather!

Trading in cotton for leather? Yes, yes, y'all. Ladies, although those darling cotton leggings are our best friends, we need to be honest and say they've served their time. Recently, I've been eyeing those cute leather- pleather for the cheap people like me- pant leggings. Leather is very tricky to wear; to pair it with just anything can look a bit tacky and overbearing. For a chic ensemble, go all black; for a retro look, add gold jewelry to your outfit; to go classy, add a dainty, oversized sweater and flats.

For the brothas, leather bottoms can either come off a little flamboyant, or send a misconstrued message. To be on the safe side, stick to leather vests or jackets; the classic look to add some simple chic-ness to the wardrobe. Obscure elegance always catches an eye (But remember: BLACK leather, boys. Please don't go '85 Michael Jackson on us with the red leather jacket). All in all, leather is the perfect go-to piece when in need. Delicate, edgy, and sophisticated. Once you go (p)leather, you never go back.

Meek Mill x Curren$y

This week the talk around St. John’s, other than the week off classes due to Sandy, is none other than Dreams and Nightmares by Meek Mill.  The album dropped this past weekend and the reviews have been mixed.  From the moment I first heard Meek I was a fan, I felt like he was going to come and change up the game, give us something we could ride to, bounce to or just hang around and chill to, but this album was not my favorite.  From the start, it seemed like almost every other song Meek does and as it progressed, with the exception of some tracks, it sounded the same throughout.  Meek channels anger, pain and his struggles that hit with a force when you listen. Tracks like “Burn” and “Believe It” gave off similar flows and eventually one can tire out before the album has played in its entirety.  Though with a few exceptions like “Traumatized” where you could feel Meek’s story and flow with him, I wasn't the biggest fan of his premier album.

Meek is in the family of plenty of rappers who came before his time, and got big from the underground rap scene and off mixtapes such as Dreamchasers one and two. Facing two big roads to choose from, continuing to produce the music that the fans they already love to bump to or choosing to go more “mainstream” and produce more pop songs.  Each definitely has their own disadvantages, choosing the fan route could mean closing yourself off from getting a bigger fan base and choosing “mainstream” could push away your already avid listeners.  Take Wale for example, for his first album Attention Deficit he decided to go pop and those album sales are history.  But you have to give Meek some credit for this album, he stayed true to his voice and played to his strengths.  I look forward to his future works and hope he changes it up a bit.

One of my favorite rappers Curren$y dropped a new mixtape titled Priest Andretti.  Curren$y has a flow that’s so unique, very chill vibe and for his first mixtape after his summer album The Stoned Immaculate I thought it was very well done.  Tracks that I can’t stop listening to are without a doubt “Feelin’ Like”, “Amsterdam (Freestyle)” and “Motion” which features Corner Boy P.

Keep a look out for The Weeknd’s Trilogy LP coming soon!

Black Solidarity Day!

Black Solidarity Day was founded in 1969 to reflect on our role in society, but more specifically, in our community. On this day, participants of Black Solidarity Day refrain from purchasing any products that were not sold by businesses owned by persons of color. The reason being is to show that as minorities, these major companies benefit greatly from us. It is a day to come together, reflect, and support the local businesses in our communities.

Join us on November 5th, 2012.

All of our events for the day will take place in Marillac Terrace.

Caste System in India

“ The caste system in India is an informal social strata based on a creation story from the Hindu Rigveda. In the story, the world is created from the sacrifice of a common man, whose body was split to form four varnas, or societal subgroups - Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra. Later, the varnas grew to include a fifth group, the Ati-Shudra, also known as 'untouchables' or 'Dalits'. Over time, thousands of jati - or individual castes - formed within these larger varnas.”

The caste system in India has been going on for over two thousand years. Although it was banned by the constitution sixty years ago, it is still going on.  The untouchables are at the bottom of the caste system. The caste system is so deeply ingrained in Indian society that the “untouchables” feel that they deserve to work menial jobs with no place for advancement. Young children do not associate themselves with the “untouchables” because they fear being polluted or cursed.

Anupama Rao, an associate professor at Barnard College and author of "The Caste Question" has stated that the caste system is more like a legal status. One’s occupation, social hierarchy and job title can be determined by his or her caste. Interestingly enough, something as intricate as marriage and sexual relations is determined by one’s caste.  Matrimony websites display caste divisions in relationship searches- that is how deep it is.
The Indian government has made advancements to uplift the Daltis through affirmative action and reservations. Most activists are in favor of affirmative action but feel that reservations will make the people too lazy as they will grow dependent on the government. To be honest, I think the caste system should be abolished as a whole, but that will be a far reach, seeing as this mentality is already deeply ingrained in the society. It is up to the current generation to use education and entrepreneurship to curb and eliminate the caste system.

Fool's Gold x Lana Del Rey

This past weekend I was lucky enough to run along side Philly’s come up rapper Grande Marshall.  Grande has just recently signed with Fool’s Gold inc, who threw a party for their new artists signed as well as for their five year anniversary.  So off I was to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to party the night away with performances by Troy Ave, Flosstradamus, Flatbush Zombies, A Trak, Donnis, Nick Catchdubs World’s Fair and Ghostface Killah.  The best part? VIP access! The Music Hall of Williamsburg was full of fans who were lucky enough to actually get in to this free concert, the line was so crazy outside the police had to come clear the block twice, so you can imagine how excited everyone was just to be there listening to live great music.  With free give-aways, water spraying on the audience and the artist crowd surfing while performing, the excitement in the building was crazy!  For those of you who don’t know what Fool’s Gold is, it is a Brooklyn based record label founded in 2007.  Fool’s Gold brings together the worlds of hip-hop and electronic music and is growing quickly!

If your looking for more free concerts like this, check out myfreeconcert.com

I’m always on the look-out for different kinds of music from artists that push the limits and that without a doubt is Lana Del Rey.  Lana’s a singer songwriter from New York, with a indie-pop, alternative and sadcore style, though you may have most recently seen her singing in H&M’s newest commercials.  Her second studio album Born to Die featured great songs like “Blue Jeans” , where she talks about her love for a man whose chasing his dreams while her dream is him, and “National Anthem” where she created a 60’s style video featuring A$AP Rocky as the President.  Her style is, what I would call, a creepy mix of dark twisted music but songs you won’t want to stop listening to.  She’s dropping a edition of Born to Die titled Born to Die The Paradise Edition on November 13thfeaturing her new track Ride.  The video is a 10 minute mini movie of a girl who finds love in all the strangers she meets. You should have an open mind while watching it; below is the video!

Queen Bey will be performing for the Superbowl in February! I’ve had the privilege of seeing Beyonce perform before and it was no short of amazing.  It is finally time for a timeless artist of our generation to perform at the halftime event and I can’t wait!

What’s on my replay
Ride - Lana Del Rey
Enemy – The Weeknd
Guap – Big Sean

90's Are Making A Comeback

Evolution and repetition are the two core reasons why fashion even exists. All throughout history, we can trace back trends to previous time periods, and the emulation still occurs today. Every time I enter a store with my mother or older relative I am hit with the "Girl, we used to wear this stuff back in the day! Mhm, a blast from the past". Even though we don't want to admit that we probably mimick our parents in pictures we take now from their own back then, the truth is inevitable. In my opinion, nostalgia is in the air- the 90's have certainly returned and graced our culture. Currently, sports wear, snapbacks, and eccentric hairstyles are returning to the subculture fashion scene. 90's-influenced jewelry graces our necks and ears, and Dr. Martens are returning to the U.S. from teenage infatuation. Leather and varsity jackets, snakeskin, bold letters on hats and skull caps, and all black ensembles are continually making their way onto the fashion-forward pedestal. Thanks to artists like A$ap Rocky, Joey Bada$$, and Azealia Banks, the influence from NY is spreading all over the U.S. Some may even say this influence is spreading all over the world because of social-networking sites. So, ladies and gents, return to mom and pop's house and dig out those old, certainly not outdated, vintage tee shirts and jackets. It's going to be a nostalgic and eclectic winter.

Village Halloween Parade

After 400 years of folktales, village legends of witchcraft and superstition, and the obsessive hype that led to scary movie productions and costume stores, Halloween is still here to stay. Every year people look forward to entertaining the Autumn season with the celebration of Halloween, and every year they expect a fun and festive night. Is candy corn and a scary movie a little too cliché for you? If so, NYC is hosting some of the most extravagant events all throughout this week to celebrate Halloween. The annual Village Halloween Parade is a nice kick-off to the celebrations. Museum and haunted house tours, cemetery tours and ghost tours all procede to allow a chance for everyone in New York to get a spook.
Stay safe- the freaks come out at night!

R&B x Frank Ocean x Kendrick Lamar

Remember the 90’s?  Sweet R&B, raw Hip Hop.  Okay, so some of us were still in diapers for the start of it, but regardless we remember the jams. This past Monday evening I re-visited the best of the 90’s when I accompanied my sister to a Brandy concert. At first I was like, what could Brandy perform? She was one of my favorites from the 90’s for more reasons than just playing Moesha.  She got me really excited, especially when she performed the mutual favorites like “Top of the World” and “Sittin’ Up In My Room”.  It felt like the whole crowd was vibin’ with her. She then took a break and had Luke James take the stage who performed his single “I Want You”.  It was really beautiful; his voice commanded the whole theatre and I made a mental note to put that song on my IPod when I got home.  Brandy came back out with “Have U Ever” and my favorite “Almost Doesn’t Count”, singing them just as beautifully as the first time you fell in love with them.  I love the 90’s because the songs from that time period hold a kind of memory; one that every time you hear a song it still makes you feel the same as the first time you heard it.  She ended with her single “Put it Down”, I must admit I’m not a fan of this one but the crowd was hyped.  Check out her new CD, Two Eleven.

Frank Ocean has written us another letter.  It seems Frank likes to rely on his blog to vent, and this time he talked about his next career moves, working with Jay-Z and Pharrell and falling for someone new.  I love the post by Frank; it’s like a peak into the diary of his beautifully deep mind.  You can read the post at frankocean.com.  This week Rick Ross released The Black Bar Mitzvah, a mixtape with a couple of familiar tracks, and features with Gunplay, and 2 Chainz. The mixtape could have offered more for me.  It seems like the same Ross songs and I’d hate to see him continue to make repetitive songs after his recent album God Forgives, I Don’t.  Other recent mixtapes that came out are Gucci Manes Trap God, Iggy Azelia’s Trap Gold and Wiz Khalifa’s Cabin Fever 2.

Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are set to release their albums on the same day this November.  Rihanna will be dropping her seventh studio album, Unapologetic, while Nicki will put out Roman Reloaded The Re-Up on November 19th ! Guess we should prepare for whose sales will be higher on the charts.

Alumni Dinner Recap

We hope you all had a wonderful weekend! On behalf of our executive board and committee chairs, we would like to thank all those who attended our Annual Alumni Dinner on October 14, 2012. We hope you enjoyed the evening, the food, and the alumni! It is always wonderful to be in the presence of those who laid the foundation for us. We would not be where we are today if it were not for their actions to ensure that members of the Pan-African community have a solid voice on St. John's University's campus. Last night was also a great networking opportunity, as many undergrads were able to speak with Alumni and gain some insight into their prospective careers.

Palestine's Oppression

t’s so hard to believe that Palestine used to be an independent state before, now all they have is the West Bank and Gaza strip.  The oppression of the Palestinian people began with the migration of the Zionists. Zionists were overzealous Jewish people seeking a land to settle down in. They found one: Palestine.  With the help of the British and the U.N the Jewish people were able to take over Palestine. They called it Israel and left the Palestine’s with only the West Bank and the Gaza strip- which is getting smaller and smaller every day.
It does not take a genius to figure out that the Palestinians are being oppressed. This conflict goes back to the issue of colonialism and “white” supremacy; in this case the Jewish people are acting as the Colonists. The history of Palestine and Israeli says it all- Israel is in the wrong. Over seven hundred and fifty thousand innocent Palestinian men, women, and children have been killed and yet Israel is still being supported.

I am very pro U.N. involvement but I am beginning to question their motives because I feel at this point they aren’t doing much to help the Palestinians recover their land and their human rights. It has been sixty years since Israel’s founding but there are still many Palestinian refugees who have not found a permanent home. The Gaza strip now holds many Palestinian homeless people and is also underfunded by the Israeli government. People die there every day and it seems as if no one notices.  Even at that, it’s crazy how Palestinians are discriminated against and dehumanized in their land. They are subject to discrimination in almost every aspect of life: from education to housing to healthcare.

I know it might seem like the Israeli-Palestine conflict does not really affect the average American, after all, it is all the way in the Middle East right? Well, wrong. Israeli is reaping the benefits of YOUR tax dollars.  Studies have shown that Israeli-not even up to the size of New York- have received most of your foreign taxes. In other words you are giving Israeli more money to mistreat and oppress more Palestinian people. We as Americans and global citizens should be more empathetic towards people in other parts of the world.

We can start with small things like educating ourselves and shedding light on the matter-or go all out like Mona and protest (By the way,  watch the video of Mona exercising her rights to free speech below if you want to feel inspired to do something).

If you want to educate yourself further on the Israeli/ Palestine conflict you read the articles below.

D.I.Y.s? Oh My!

I might be the only one who relates to this, but I remember during Christmas I used to receive those random, ‘this-is-wack-because-it-isn’t-the-new-gameboy-or-the-new-ashanti-cd-MOM’ presents that I’m sure no one else in my whole school received. I used to think my dear mother was such a cornball for buying me gifts like Tie-Dye kits, the kits with an array of beads and string to make your own jewelry, and that infamous Bedazzler machine for your jeans. (Yes, she went there.) Although I was angry at her all day on Christmas, it would be about 2-3 weeks that I would sit on my bed and begin to create things on my clothing, and the vibe of guilty pleasure would fill the room. So succeeding that terribly embarrassing anecdote, the moral of the story is as follows: DIY fashion is taking over the world again. DIY is “Do-It-Yourself”, and those kits at the craft stores are an enabler to a whole new aspect of personal taste in wardrobe. Today we see a lot of clothing at the stores with studs, beads, knits, and embedded stitching in the jeans- DIY is a way to create your look to emulate the styles you see in the boutiques with your own twist. DIY is economical and a path to show off your creative and artistic side into your clothing. There are many tutorials on YouTube and throughout the internet to guide you to your personalized finished product. Head to the thrift store, find a piece that has potential to add your own spice, and grab scissors, spray paint, needle and thread, and some jewels. Here are some examples:

Hip Hop Awards x Waka Flocka Flame

This week it’s all about the BET Hip Hop Awards Cyphers; because we all know that’s the real reason we tune in every October anyway.

The West Coast killed it highlighting Cali’s best with Xzibit, Kurput, E-40, DJ Quik, Snoop Lion and Kendrick Lamar.  The old school sat at the table while YG and Kendrick stood up, giving a hierarchy feel if you will.  Xzibit started it off proving age ain’t nothin’ but a number, as even after all these years his flow is still just as crazy and he had me feeling like I couldn’t get enough.  Kendrick Lamar proved once again why he’s quickly becoming one of everyone’s favorite rappers.  I always love when an artist can bring intellect through their perspective and Kendrick is well known for this.  Speaking on kids having dreams of being a lawyer or a doctor instead of finding their fate determined in the barrel of a chopper, now don’t quote me, but there is nothing like the intelligence one can find in a Kendrick.

The Ruff Ryder’s Cypher brought all the classics back together with DMX, Mook, Cassidy and Eve.  While Talib Kweli mentioned how he is unappreciated in the Hip Hop industry, but really he’s just what we need in music today; deep, raw talent.  T.I.’s Grand Hustle Cypher had me excited, come on I’m not the only one who missed T.I.!  The lineup was Trae Tha Truth, Chip, Iggy Azelia and B.O.B.  T.I.’s international team has a mean flow with Chip’s hailing all the way from England putting his foot down proving he is ready to be heard on this side of the pond, and Iggy showing that she’s a bad girl that can keep up with the boys.  Check it out on the link below.  Also check out T.I.’s new song that I can’t stop playing “Ball” featuring Lil’ Wayne; that track goes hard especially on the beat.

This week at St. John’s we had Waka Flocka Flame drop in and show the WSJU Radio some love with an interview.  As I ran over to catch him come out of the booth the hallway was flooded with STJ student fans holding up posters and his latest Mixtape, Salute Me or Shoot Me 4.  The rapper spent some time signing posters and taking photos with the fans, I was lucky enough to have a few words with him.  He mentioned he was excited about his Family and Friends Tour, which you can all get tickets for from the link below.  Hurry before it’s sold out!
