About

Haraya was founded in the fall of 1968 by six African-American students attending St. John’s University. It has since then become one of the largest cultural organizations on the Queens campus. Haraya is a Swahili word meaning Pride, Dignity and Freedom. With these ideologies in mind, we aim to provide a platform that encourages students to succeed both academically and professionally. Haraya strives to fulfill the ultimate goal of uplifting and educating both the St. John's community and the community at large.
