So Much To Do in a New York Minute

Let the countdown begin!  With just a week before finals, it’s time to get bountiful doses of New York City before voyaging home or heading on vacation! So what have you been missing out on?  Let’s see.  Scrumptious delights at food trucks. Spectacular deals on the latest in entertainment. Lively festivities at BAM.  New York City’s opportunities are literally endless.  Now is the time to embark on New York City adventures before it’s too late!  Let’s unveil a few happenings this week!

Truck + Food = Happiness.  Food trucks have been the latest rave over the past year and its demand only continues to expan. It’s nifty. It’s cool. It’s innovative. Food trucks no longer sell hot dogs and pretzels. No no. They sell gourmet delights guaranteed to blow your mind.  Known for their portable wood-burning pizza oven, PizzaMoto has managed to produce a traveling pizzeria. Though the menu is quite typical, the taste is out of this world. PizzaMoto sells personal pizzas drizzled with olive oil and garnished with melted globs of mozzarella.  Normally parked at flea markets and popular destinations throughout Brooklyn, it’s best to track this sucker down via twitter.
https://twitter.com/pizzamotobklyn. On the other hand, if you have a sweet tooth that needs to be soothed, wait no longer—the cupcake truck is here. That’s right.  CupcakeStop is a one-stop truck for hungry New Yorkers in search for a tasty treat. Cupcake sizes come in regular and mini, so you don’t feel guilty indulging in these heavenly sweets.  Cupcake flavors range from chocolate all the way to French vanilla garnished with caramelized bacon.  And it gets better.  Customers are encouraged to submit funky cupcake ideas. If chosen, the customer will receive 100 complimentary cupcakes of their unique design. Like PizzaMoto, CupcakeStop can best be tracked via twitter. Visit https://twitter.com/cupcakestop.

At ScoreBig.com, you do just that—score BIG! ScoreBig slashes prices for the most desirable venues not only in New York City, but throughout the United States. Mark my words.  With ScoreBig you have the opportunity to score the best seats for killer prices. Personally, I brought 2 Brooklyn Nets tickets for approximately $185 in total.  My seats were about 6 to 8 rows away from the floor seats!  While prices are always discounted, the earlier you buy tickets the greater the availability.  ScoreBig is currently featuring tickets for Mets games, Yankees games, Spiderman and The Lion King, just to name a few.  Whether you’re interested in buying tickets now, or scoring tickets in another state, this is a great and affordable resource to lock in your memory bank.

If you haven’t been down to the Brooklyn Museum on the first Saturday of the month, you’re truly missing out!  But I have good news.  It’s not too late!  This Saturday marks the 5th first Saturday event of the year.  From 5 pm to 11 pm, you can revel in the cultural activities happening throughout the museum.  You will be given an opportunity to compose watercolor postcards of a destination from your imagination, which is inspired by the latest exhibit, watch a film that “chronicles the adventures of two young women traveling through multiple realities” and flaunt your latest spring threads at a garden party accompanied by musical group Les Chauds Lapins.

Now who said Halloween can’t happen year around?!  On Saturday, hop on the train heading towards Time Scare, I mean, Time Square to plunge into a world of terror.  No costume necessary.  Located 668 8th Avenue, the Time Scare Haunted House easily echoes the eerie scenery of a nightmarish psychiatric hospital.  Fraught with many twists and turns that feature gruesome sights, shocks and scenes reminiscent of horror films, you’re destined to leave frightened, panting and perhaps, in tears.  Have no worries.  You can ease that anxiety with a delicious meal at their restaurant.  General admission tickets are $27, but if you rally a group of friends, ticket prices are chopped off by 20 to 30 percent.  Ticket times are for 3:00 PM Saturday and 1:00 AM Sunday!  The choice is yours.  To buy tickets online, go to http://www.ticketweb.com/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=3300504&REFERRAL_ID=tmfeed&crosssite=TM_US:1652316:337347

If you’re not too tired from the thrill of the Haunted House, come out from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM to participate in NYC’s annual Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival.  That’s right. Bonnet Festival. People from across the world gather along Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th Street to flaunt their Sunday’s best!  Outfits hit both sides of the spectrum featuring outrageously eccentric to ravishingly elegant attire.  Just a quick history lesson.  Did you know that NYC’s Easter Parade spawned from the simple decision to decorate churches with flowers in celebration of Easter back in the 1800’s? The small gesture produced what we see today at the parade!  Get a glimpse of what the parade entails with a clip from 2012’s Easter Parade. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHWuPmEmJ5A

For all my sports lovers, most specifically Knicks and Nets fans, I have a treat for you.  Recently, I came across a wonderful website called Scorebig.com.  Now, when I first found it and discovered how phenomenal their deals were, I was convinced they were a scam.  Nope!  Turns out, they were the best website I’ve discovered in a while.  Scorebig, in short, resells tickets to popular events, including concerts and sporting events, for killer prices.  All that you have to do is choose an event and offer a bidding price for your tickets.  Within hours to two days, they will let you know whether your bid has been accepted.  I scored 2 tickets to a Nets game sitting 10 rows away from the floor for 200 bucks!  Keep in mind; I did purchase the tickets a month and a half in advance. Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert

For one-night-only, a star-studded cast of music industry’s most valuable players will be gracing New York City’s legendary arena, Madison Square Garden, to put on a benefit concert for Hurricane Sandy!  This event, officially tagged the 12.12.12 concert, will be featuring performances from Billy Joel and Paul McCartney to Alicia Keys and Kanye West.  If you haven’t guessed already, the show will be going down this Wednesday, December 12!  You have a chance to attend a viewing of this benefit concert for free—yes FREE!

Many people can recall the momentous Concert for New York City benefit that took place weeks after September 11, 2001 in honor of New York Fire Department and New York Police Department’s first responders, their families, those lost in the attacks and those in recovery.  Well, the same organizers of that event are putting on the benefit concert for families affected by Hurricane Sandy’s wrath.  This benefit is expected to be a remarkable event in history and it’s happening right here in New York City!   All proceeds will directly benefit Hurricane Sandy victims through the Robin Hood Foundation.

You don’t have to worry about this performance costing you a single penny, as selected movie theatres in hurricane-affected areas will be screening the show live for free with complimentary snacks!  Because tickets are distributed on a first come, first serve basis, it’s advised that you contact the listed movie theatre to ensure your seat at the screening!

Additionally, the concert will be broadcast globally!  For one magical night, the United States and international television stations, Clear Channel radio stations and premier websites, such as YouTube and Yahoo, will be broadcasting the event worldwide.  Event producers James Dolan, John Sykes and Harvey Weinstein expressed their anticipation in this disclosed statement: "The live simulcast of this historic benefit concert in movie theatres will provide a welcome opportunity for those people still recovering from the devastation to have an enjoyable and a much-needed night out. Seeing this incredible all-star lineup on the big screen and hearing it in surround sound will certainly make for a memorable evening."

All in all, victims still recovering from Sandy will be able to experience a well-deserved night out to forget about their troubles and rock out with their favorite musicians!  Spread the word; you won’t want to miss out!  To check out the movie theatre locations visit this website: http://www.121212concert.org/watch#section-5

This Saturday, the Brooklyn Museum opens it’s doors for you to indulge in a wide range of culturally eclectic events and programs.  Here are a few interesting happenings going on this Saturday:

Flex is King:  Flex is King is a raw, uncut documentary that takes a glimpse into the dance movement “flexing”.   Featuring flexing artists, Deidre Schoo and Michael Beach Nichols, the documentary takes on a candid, but inspirational melody, which ultimately highlights the beauty and precision of this art form.  Several clips will be exclusively shown this Saturday!  Additionally, this event will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers and a live demonstration of flexing! Be sure to view the trailer here: http://vimeo.com/35915742
Soulful Tunes:  Maya Azucena is a talented singer-songwriter who will be gracing First Saturday visitors with her new album, Cry Love.  Ms. Azucena’s sound is reminiscent of Jill Scott.  Cry Love is smooth.  It’s groovy.  It’s soulful.
Spit and Passion:  The author of Spit and Passion Cristy C. Roads will be discussing her new book about her struggle finding a balance her strong Cuban Catholic roots, and family, while discovering her “newfound queer identity”.
Get Moving:  First Saturdays will be closing with a dance performance by L.O.U.D (League of Unreal Dancing).   L.O.U.D is a Brooklyn-based dance agency that features multi-talented performers that use dance to express individuality!  Most L.O.U.D performances are gritty, exciting dance battles that incite energy and exhilaration in audience members.  Expect a good time.

What to do in NYC: Black Friday Edition

To shop or not to shop, that is the question.  With Black Friday just a few days away, the level of anxiety and excitement across America is increasing by the second.  Black Friday is a highly anticipated event in many households across the nation and it looks like Black Friday 2012 will not disappoint!  Therefore, I’ve taken the time to cruise through several newspapers and websites looking for the best Black Friday sales happening not just in New York, but also the rest of the country.

Urban Outfitters:  Urban Outfitter is infamous for selling overpriced goodies.   Lucky for us, Urban Outfitters is offering customers 50% off all sale items.  Whether the object of your desire is $7 or a $100, 50% off will do you justice!

H&M:  While H&M hasn’t released their sales for Black Friday yet, they have a Black Friday presale going on between November 19th and 21st.  They’re offering deals starting at just $7!  While many retail-clothing stores aren’t revealing what they’ll have in store, I know that several lucky men and women will score H&M’s desirable collab items with Versace and Maison Martin Margiela for terrific prices.  Additionally, there’s buzz that H&M will be dropping prices for many items to just $5—seriously!

Tommy Hilfiger:  Tommy Hilfiger just revealed their exciting Black Friday deals for 2012!  All items—I repeat—all items in the store will be 40% off and all purchases over $200 will receive an additional 25% percent off!  Do not miss out!

Victoria’s Secret:  I have good news for participants of Victoria’s Secret Black Friday sale last year!  Those amazing limited edition tote bags abundantly filled with beauty must-haves will again be given out to customers this year when at least $65 is spent!  Last year, the bag alone was valued at $70!  While Victoria’s Secret hasn’t revealed their deals for Black Friday, I am sure they will be worthwhile!  Additionally, if it’s anything like last year, customers shopping online will be given the opportunity to receive the limited edition totes as well!

Target:  Target is offering many drool-worthy items for phenomenal prices.  Target is the perfect place for Black Friday shopping if you’re looking for a tremendous amount of sales and a variety of items to steal—yes, steal!  The prices are so great they’re nearly a steal.  The three featured items on the website includes, the Canon T3 DSLR bundle originally $749.99 but now $499.99, the Nook Simple touch originally $99.99 but now $49.00, and the 4 GB XBox 360 Kinect Bundle originally $299.99 but now $199.99.  While these are all electronic goodies, Target will be offering deals for toys, entertainment, women apparel, men apparel, children apparel, home goods, furniture, Christmas items, and health and beauty products.  In short, if you’re heading to Target, you need to have a plan in place!  Visit the website to review ALL Black Friday deals! (http://www.target.com/c/target-black-friday/-/N-5q0f2)

Wal-Mart:  Wal-Mart promises “some of the year's best shopping values” this Black Friday 2012!  Much like Target, Wal-Mart is featuring a website page dedicated to revealing all of their well-calculated deals for consumers.  Check them out here!  (http://localad.walmart.com/Walmart/Entry/Flash?forceview=y&povid=cat1076614-env430434-module480045-lLink2&promotioncode=LA_Walmart-121123)  I think I have to agree with Wal-Mart when they say that they’re offering some of the greatest deals of the year because there are so many deals that are truly inexpensive!  To name a few, 1/4 Carat Diamond Hoop Earrings in Sterling Silver will be $38; Casio G-Shock watches will be $47, and Danskin pullovers for $6.  If you’re looking for electronics or kids toys, Wal-Mart is offering the greatest deals.  Be sure to peruse the website!

Best Buy:  How can you not expect Best Buy to elevate the excitement and deliver some generous deals on the latest gadgets and electronics?!  Best Buy’s circular highlights include, the Canon PowerShot A2300 digital camera for just $79.99, a 10-Cup Drip Coffeemaker for $7.99, and a Samsung 28.0-Cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator (Stainless-Steel) originally priced at $3,199.99 but now $1,899.99!  Now, I’m not sure if you’re looking for a refrigerator at this point, but I LOVE a good deal!  To view the rest, visit this website.  (http://blackfriday.com/stores/best-buy?store=best-buy)

Village Halloween Parade

After 400 years of folktales, village legends of witchcraft and superstition, and the obsessive hype that led to scary movie productions and costume stores, Halloween is still here to stay. Every year people look forward to entertaining the Autumn season with the celebration of Halloween, and every year they expect a fun and festive night. Is candy corn and a scary movie a little too cliché for you? If so, NYC is hosting some of the most extravagant events all throughout this week to celebrate Halloween. The annual Village Halloween Parade is a nice kick-off to the celebrations. Museum and haunted house tours, cemetery tours and ghost tours all procede to allow a chance for everyone in New York to get a spook.
Stay safe- the freaks come out at night!

InspiredWordNYC

“If poetry is a lost art, then I am the compass”. Looking back on it, it’s a very corny Lil’ Wayne-esque quote, but it was a line in poem I wrote for a poetry slam back in high school. However, if we get past the laughing, can we at least agree the quote has some truth to it? In present times, I feel as though our generation solely concentrates on music and film because it’s so readily available. I have no opposition to either, but it seems that writing, poetry, and the fine arts have lost their spotlight over the years. Advocates for the arts, such as myself, would say it’s unfortunate because we live in one of the most artistically rich metropolitan areas in the United States.
When I was younger I would religiously watch the movie Love Jones; it molded the expectations I had for the poetry scene in New York and made me infatuated with spoken word. As I grew older, I began to research poets, engage in spoken word events, and spend all my money at Barnes and Nobles on Saul Williams’ books. This particular passion I had followed me as I came to college and became the catalyst for my search for spoken word events in the city. My successful search is worthy enough to pass on and share with the public.
Thanks to Google, I came across a blog that provided me with all the outlets for NYC poetry that I needed. It’s called “Mike Geffner Presents the Inspired Word”. (See footnote for link.) On this blog, you can find links and information for the 411 on local and famous spoken word artists, events in the city, informational articles, and just news updates about the poetry world in New York. Because I was so interested, I signed up for the email newsletter which provides me with information on every time there is a spoken word event going on in the city. There is a wide variety of venues- some veteran and familiar, and others that are random and unknown to prevent creating a set routine. Phone numbers are provided in the email and individuals working at the venue will help you if you have questions or need directions. Although some venues may be 21+ because of the serving of alcohol, many are all ages and start at decent times in the evening. Being a broke college student, I find myself refusing to pay an excessive amount of money for events; the most I paid for an event with The Inspired Word was ten dollars, and I was able to run into Mos Def the same night. At these events, there are opportunities to meet a few faces and network, to cool out in a relaxed venue, and let many urban artists distract you from anything going on with you in the moment and captivate you with their poetic storytelling.

Fool's Gold

With the beginning of a new school year, and the closing ceremonies of summer, many events begin to take place to reconcile the hot days and long nights. On Monday, September 3rd, Downtown NYC was blessed with yet another free concert from the #Been#Trill cats from Fool's Gold. The 'Day Off' concert was the beginning of the end of summer, and the riotous fun that took place is the least you can say as to why it symbolizes NYC events.

The line-up- Danny Brown, French Montana, Flatbush Zombies, Flosstradamus and many others- were one of the main reasons why this small venue was so crowded. City Winery allows the people at Fool's Gold to take over their cement 'backyard' to throw their annual, free, labor day bash, but this year the space just wasn't enough. When I arrived, I had to walk around the building, what felt like, for miles. So many individuals- from ages ten to fourty- were dressed in their best street attire. There was a group of kids from Australia in front of me in line; they spent just about one grand on tickets just for the event. After losing my place in line, I luckily got in through VIP. Once I was in, a jubilant feeling came over me. I was in by 3 p.m., so I began to brace myself for the remaining five hours of bliss.

After looking around for a few minutes, I bumped into Atrak and didn't realize who he was until a friend of mine mentioned to take a picture. His cool and reserved disposition welcomed me, and I somehow thought the rest of the day would translate like his smooth demeanor. Wrong. Many performances were cut short due to sporadic technological problems; it began to rain; stage dives bruised me from the neck up; a riotous rush from the outside dominoed to the front, where I was, and people were almost trampled on; it began to rain harder; followed by the fact that they cut the whole festival short because the NYPD came and shut it down.

Despite all the mishaps, I had an amazing time. Afterwards I had a huge headache, I was dehydrated, water-what hopefully was water- was in my eye from the people on stage doing their thing, and I didn't pay a thing. Witnessing a surprise entrance and performance by A$AP Rocky and the whole A$AP Mob was a quite worth the rain and angry mob. The humbling experience to share the love of music with unfamiliar people is worth enduring it all over again next Labor Day- I'm just bringing a helmet and an umbrella.
